Get Smart

** ½

Rated S for silly

Steve Carell as Max is OK.  I guess being accustomed to Don Adams makes him hard to match, but not bad.  Anne Hathaway is beginning to show her range.  Having started her career on television in the series Get Real, and after a number of G rated appearances she moved to change her image and did a couple of adult films, Havoc and Brokeback Mountain.

She co-starred with Meryl Streep in The Devil Wears Prada (2006), and how can you get a better co-star than that?  Here she shows comic versatility as well.

If you recall the TV series, Get Smart, you remember that Don Adams created this wry character which, incidentally, was created by Mel Brooks and Buck Henry.  Some reviewers tell you the story as if that mattered.  You are here for the laughs, not the story.  Discussing the narrative is like Playboy magazine telling you which books the centerfold has read.  Completely beside the point.

So if you like S rated comedies and you have recollection and affection for the characters, go see it.  Don’t expect much.  Don’t bother about the story.  Don’t sit on the edge of your seat, and for Pete’s sake, don’t engage your brain.
